SOP length?

So, I have a kind of stupid question. Please forgive me.

What do you guys think is a reasonable length for a SOP when there is no formal length requirement or restriction mentioned? I was thinking 1500 words, but a couple of people I asked said this sounded a bit on the long side. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Let's get "Teh" in the dictionary! Think of the Scrabble® players!!!

People, the National Post is reporting that we are THIS CLOSE to getting the word "Teh" in the dictionary. That's right: "Teh". Right next to "Meh" and "Truthiness." COME ON!

It's prolly all Theo's fault.

CHECK IT, MOFOS!

Np

Thanks for the heads-up, The Dude!

I have been searching for a feed for for this, http://bertquinnjephdan.blogspot.com/, blog for a while, but then found this community while looking!

I would really appreciate if someone could create a feed for it. Or point me in the direction if one is already created.

Thanks!

Long distance LOR.

Urgle.

So I have a school that would like me to send my LORs and application together in one big bundle. The due date is Dec. 15.

I have an LOR coming from a prof who is at a school far from me. When I sent him my LOR info I gave him my school address thinking he'd mail it to me and then I'd put it in my bundle. But now I'm worrying that it might not make it in time for me to mail it with everything else.

Has anyone had a similiar situation??

He's been super nice saying don't worry he'd get everything in on time. I'm just wondering if I should just have him send it directly to the school instead of to me, or wait it out. Urgle.

GRE Score Reports

So do we think the October subject scores will reach schools by the Dec. 1 deadlines?

I ask because for the schools that recommended subject scores, I just checked off the boxes to have ETS report the subject AND general scores to save me the extra money of sending the general scores separately. I want my schools to get the scores on time, especially since some don't even have my generals yet.

Silly Question

I'm appling to lit programs and every single one of the 11 schools that I am applying to say 1-2 or 1-3 page statement of purpose. Now, does this double spaced or single spaced? I assumed double space, but a professor of mine said that that's too short. Isn't 2 or 3 single spaced pages far too long? None of my apps give word limits, oh how I pray for word limits!

So, double or single? (also, some of the apps clearly state double spaced in the writing sample reqs but none of them say either way for the sop- should I take that as a clue for single space?)

Awful GRE writing score!

Hi all,

I did reasonably well in GRE verbal -680 but ended up getting a 4 ! in the analytical writing section.
I have a horrible typing speed so did run out of time but never thought I would end up getting such a horrible score. How bad is it? If I have good published writing samples would I be able to make up?

any advice?

SoP including a list of achievements

So I have a Sop question that asks applicants to discuss the goals/objectives and to list "memberships in honor societies & professional organizations; scholarships, prizes, honors, or other recognition; and give titles of publications, major papers, or theses of which you are author or co-author." It is supposed to be 1000 words.

I don't know how to list all the stuff that is supposed to be in my CV in an essay with that length. Do you guys have any suggestions to tackle this question? I can manage to talk about some important works but listing everything, at least to me, will make the essay not so interesting and very long.

i am so ashamed i have to ask this, lol

I need to order a stamp for work. Which of the following (if any..) is correct?

-doctor and patient signatures
-doctor and patient's signatures
-doctor's and patient's signature

.... I think you get the idea. This is all using the knowledge there is only one doctor and only one patient signing.. Often multiple times.

Very excited. Christopher booked us another trip out to San Francisco for next month. This time we are staying in Sausalito on the house boat instead of in the city. We will be arriving on the 18th in the afternoon and staying until late evening on the 22nd. Cant wait to see Christopher's mom, Jeff, and Edi again. Also, we are talking about going to the new aquarium, maybe seeing Alcatraz and definitely spending more time in Japan-town.

[info]berlyn Are you still going to be in Cali next month???? Would love to hang out again.

Article help!

I am in desperate, desperate place. I need to get my hands on this article, a.s.a.p. I will forever be in your debt :

Annotated Bibliographies

I'm compiling a short annotated bibliography for a fellowship application and I'm having trouble deciding what should go in it. These two sources have the same information and are by the same author, but which one looks better than the other?

1. A 1990 article in Annual Review of Sociology
2. A 2005 textbook

The textbook is more recent and extensive but perhaps aimed more at undergrads, while the article is more to the point, but old. Relatedly, which generally looks better, a well known reference or something that is not as well known but more recent? I would cite both if there were no limit, but I do need to choose here.

Thanks for any feedback you can offer!

UPDATE: I'm going with the article. Thanks for the quick feedback. I love this community. It's vastly superior to trying to track down a professor...

October subject scores!

I don't know if this is true for every subject, but the scores for the Literature GRE (from the October exam) is now available through the scores-by-phone system.

1-888-GRE-SCORE (1-888-473-7267)
U.S., U.S. Territories*, and Canada

You'll need your name and ssn, the test date, and a credit card to handle the $12 fee.

Good luck! (my apologies for the flagrant cross-posting--I know that many of you are waiting for this, and thought the repetition is justified).

(how did you guys do?)

The Lurking Nose!

In icy Nosevember, as the west wind blows
As mercury plummets and shutters close
As candles flicker their final throes
What lurks nearby, do you suppose?

Ruh-rohs!

From highs or lows, in grim repose
Its steady, strident sniffing grows
Like tell-tale hearts in tales of Poe's
And where it comes from, no one knows.

Yesss, I yam eeen-VEEEES-ee-bulhs.

So heed this warning, to all those
Who seek out warmth for frozen toes
Where icy moistness sometimes goes,
Beware the chill of ... THE LURKING NOSE!

Grad school with a kid(s)?

I'm new to the group but noticed that some of you seem to have kids. I'm currently applying to PhD programs but am planning on having at least one kid over the next five or so years. I was just wondering what your experiences have been, whether it's doable or the worst idea ever.

In need of Appropriate wording for graduate level thesis

One chapter of my thesis will be a compare/comparison of two novels. My advisor says that I should reword the sentence "There are many similarities and differences between Novel X and Novel Y." A sentence that I can think of is "Novel X and Novel Y engage in themes of...while they differ in..."
What do you all think about this?
Can you share other suggestions with me?

We Take You Now to King Neptune Memorial Speedway

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Atlantianapolis 500, and if you've just joined us, it's been a thrilling race so far.  In a stunning upset, odds-on favorite Mario Clamdretti dropped out of the race when his 300-seahorsepower racer crashed on the far turn.  And as we enter the final laps, I see that current leader Ridley McFlatback is getting the signal from his pit crew to come in for service ...

Check my left flipper; it's running a little hot.

I hear he's got endorsement deals with Shell Oil AND Turtle Wax, Brinke G.
